Quantitative Sampling - General:
Sample locations were selected randomly from within the
reference areas and the areas to be disturbed. Sample starting
points were located on a modified random-stratified design. For
the most extensive community, sagebrush rangeland, sample points
were selected from a 200 x 200 foot grid. Sample locations were
located in the field through the use of compass and pacing. Cover
transect and woody plant quadrat directions were randomly selected
from 8 possible directions: N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, and NE. The
other two communities and the two reference areas were much
smaller. Therefore, to locate 50 potential sample points, a 100 by
100 foot grid was established. Sample points were then randomly
selected. At times, all possible sample points were used. Thus
• sampling took on a strict stratified random sampling look where all
sample points were located at fixed intervals from each other. For
each of the smaller communities and reference areas,
transect/quadrat directions were selected randomly to be 10 to 20
degrees off north, south, east or west to avoid the 165 foot tape
(50 meter transect) from overlapping between points (situated
north, south, east and west of each other). Generally,
transect/quadrat directions, once selected, were held consistent
for an entire area to avoid overlap. The approximate location of
sample points is marked on the enclosed map. Cover and woody plant
density transects originated from marked sample locations. The
location of production plots is described below. Production plot
numbers do not correspond directly to sample point numbers
indicated on the enclosed map.
• - 3 -
