• Appendix (for cover, see Ta61e 18; for production, see Table 21;
for woody plant density, see Table 24). The Snedecor-Cochran
sample site adequacy formula was used that is listed on page 15 of
the Division's "Guidelines for Compliance with Land Use and
Vegetation Requirements of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Board for Coal Mining, October, 1988"
All five areas were sampled to adequacy for cover. Table 18
lists the sample adequacy number calculated for each of the five
areas. In each case, the number of samples collected was greater
than the calculated sample adequacy number.
Only the native grassland community and its reference area
were sampled to adequacy during production sampling. Fifty
samples, the maximum required by CMLRD, were collected in the
• sagebrush rangeland community, the sagebrush rangeland reference
area, and the juniper-pinyon woodland community.
Table 24 indicates that, with regard to woody stem density,
the maximum number of samples (50 for baseline only; 35 for
reference areas) was collected in four of the five areas. This was
most likely due either to the patchiness of the sampled unit (e.g.
juniper-pinyon woodland, sagebrush rangeland community) or to the
nature of the sample adequacy formula. The native grassland
community and reference area are an example of the latter effect.
While the range of woody stem values was relatively low (0 - 17)
and fairly consistent, the variance was large in comparison with
the mean. Thus, the sample adequacy calculations for the grassland
- 14 -
r 1
L J
