• 4. Disturbed Grassland Community
This community is comparatively in poorer condition than the
three major communities. Cover and production is lower, and
cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum) and other annuals comprise a
large part of both parameters. The area has probably resulted from
a combination of fairly intensive herbicide exposure and increased
livestock use.
Table 25 provides a summary of the quantitative sampling that
was carried out in this small (9.5 acres) area. The data indicates
that average vegetative cover (14.7$) is lower and more heavily
dominated by annual species for this community than for the three
major communities. Perennial species comprise 68.2 $ of the total
vegetative cover over three species (sand dropseed, bottlebrush
• squirreltail, and globemallow). Four species of annual plants
contribute the other 31.8 ~ relative cover. The dominant
plant species is sand dropseed, which is believed to have been
seeded by the owner. No shrubs were located in any of the 11
quadrats. Shrubs did not contribute to the cover data.
SAMPLE ADEQUACY CALCULATIONS
Calculations were carried out for all three community
parameters (total vegetative cover, total herbaceous production,
and total woody stem density). Calculations are included in the
- 13 -
G
