~J
Mr. Gilbert F. Rindahl
-4-

November 4, 1983
6. The fact that 6" of topsoil is to be placed directly over clay on
t the pit floor may cause problems with revegetating this site. Typically,
Y µ clay is not a good plant growth medium, and 6" of rooting depth and water
V holding capacity will probably not be sufficient for plant growth. I
K K~ therefore recommend that the operator leave at least 6" of product below
r,~:. the topsoil (and above the clay) to help to provide adequate plant growth
~o K° medium.
1. An examination of your proposed revegetation mixture (minus the rye
nurse crop) leads me to several question areas.
J a. Are the seeding rates given to be in pounds?
b. Is the seeding to be done by drilling or by broadcasting? If
J the seed is broadcast, it should also be raked in to assure that it
is properly covered.
c. The total seeding rate, if drilled, is nearly four times as
,r,~ high as the recommended critical area rate of 40 seeds/s q. ft. and
~ nearly twice as high, if broadcast. In fact, my calculations,
~ ~~ given your seeding rates, give a total of 145 seeds/s q, ft. Such a
,, rate will almost assuredly result in negative effects on some
1,' ~,~°~ species due to competition. The balance among the species may
b(~° accelerate such competition effects. By my calculations, the
percentages of your mixture for each species (on a seeds/s q. ft.
basis) are as follows:
Species Seeds/sq. ft. Percent of Mixture
Western Wheatgrass 32 22
Sideoats Grama 16 11
Needle-and-Thread 5 3
Little Bluestem 21 14
Prairie Sandreed 22 15
Blue Grama 49 34
Total 145
Please reconsider the seeding rates of each species to give a more
practical total rate and a better species balance, or explain thoroughly
your reasons for proposing this mixture. The species composition of the
mixture seems appropriate, however.
8. How will the reclamation plan affect the ponds and the drainage way
V to the east of the operation?
Exhibit f
1. Given the fact that a pond, a well, and water usage issues are
outlined in this application, I have given a copy of this application to
the Division of Water Resources for their review. As soon as I receive
this review, I will forward a copy to you.
