RECLAMATION PLAN
Landscape Design

After mining is complete; the area will be shaped and graded. Where
possible, final grading should be done on the contour to conserve moisture
and reduce erosion. Slopes should by cut or filled so that no slope is
greater than 3:1. Seeding success will increase if lesser slopes remain.
The land will be scarified to a depth of 6 inches following grading to pro-
vide better cohesion between topsoil and the graded area.
To soil
Topsoil will be stockpiled prior to mining. After grading is completed,
topsoil will be spread over the area as evenly as possible.
Fertilizer
A soil test can be made to determine the proper amount of fertilizer,
In lieu of a soil test, 60 to 80 pounds of nitrogen per acre should be added
prior to seeding.
Seeding
Seeding will be done shortly after the topsoil is applied to prevent
excess weed growth and loss of soil by erosion. Seed will be planted with
a drill designed to plant grass seed. The area will be seeded sometime
between the end of March and the middle of April.
The following are the recommended species:
Species: Pounds-per-Acre of Pure Live Seed
blue grama Bouteloua gracilis .6
side-oats grama Bouteloua curtipendula 1.8
little bluestem Schizachyrium scoparium 1.4
prairie sand reed Calamovilfa longifolia 1.3
yellow sweetclover Meliotus officinalis .9
P4ulching

Mulch will consist of hay or straw, free of noxious weed seed, applied at
the rate of 4,000 pounds per acre. At least 50~ of the material should be 10"
or more in length. The mulch can be anchored by a disc plow with its discs set
straight or a crimper. Enough weight should be on the plow or crimper to place
the mulch 4" into the soil.
Prntartinn
The area will be protected from grazing and disturbance until it is stabilized.
Vegetation should not be burned or mowed.
