z
• Pinyon-Juniper Type
Because of the steep topography, the frequent drainages dis-
secting the pinyon-juniper type and the rather shallow soils this
area was not considered a highly productive area. However, this
type had rather high plant diversity considering the low overall
potential for plant growth. The total actual foliage cover for
this pinyon-juniper type was only 13.45X which was composed of 9
perennial grasses, 10 perennial forbs and 8 shrubs. Annual brome
grass and tansy mustard made up 2.96X of the total 13.45X (Table 1).
Perennial grasses made up 4.15X of the actual vegetation cover, forbs
2.96X and shrubs 3.38X. Thus perennial grasses made up 30.83X of the
total species composition, perennial forbs 21.96X, shrubs 25.08X and
annuals 22.O1X (Table 1).
• The major species consisted of 4 perennial grasses, 2 perennial
forbs, and 1 shrub (big sagebrush). The canopy cover of trees
(pinyon pine and juniper) was not determined but it would have been
somewhat greater than the total understory cover. The 3 grasses
produced 13.01 grams per plot, 2 forbs 77.68 grams and sagebrush
1.75 grams (Table 3).
Total surface soil cover for the pinyon-juniper type was 10.22X
for perennial understory vegetation, 0.38X for cushion plants, 14.37X
foz litter and 15.OOX for rocks. The remainder of the plot was of-
course bare soil which vas 56.S7X (Table 4).
The average biomass per meter plot for the pinyon-juniper type
for the understory plants vas 43.42 grams (Table 5).
