Vegetation Inventory on the Storm Ring Mine
South of Castle Dale, Colorado
By C. TJayne Cook
Sagebrush Type
The vegetation cover for the sagebrush type vas composed of
12 grasses, 12 (orbs and 6 shrubs. These 30 species produced a total
actual cover of foliage of 37.49X of the ground surface with perennial
grasses amounting to 4.31, perennial forbs O.SOX and shrubs 17.61X
(Table 1). Thus perennial grasses made up 11.49X of the total vege-
tation cover, perennial forbs 1.29X and shrubs 46.96X. Annual brome
grass alone made up 40.19X of the total foliage cover.
The major perennial species consisted of 6 grasses which made up
•
11.11X of the total herbage cover and one shrub (big sagebrush) which
made up 46.57X of the total cover (Table 2). Cushion plants covered
1.66% of the soil surface, litter 19.20X, rock 5.28X aad this left a
total of 36.12X of the soil unoccupied and referred to as bare ground
(Table 4).
Average biomass for the sagebrush type amounted to 104.6 grams
per square meter plot. This consisted of 19.6 grams perennial grasses,
1.63 grams perennial forbs, 75.38 grams shrubs (sagebrush) and 7.99
grams for annual grasses (annual brome) as shown in Table 5.
The average density of the only shrub of consegience (big
sagebrush) vas 14.92 per 9 square meter plots with as average height
of 64.04 centimeters.
