Drilling to a TD of 1350 ft
was completed by July 15, 1999. Drilling was done using Laye Western
Explorer-Challenger drill rig set up for reverse-circulation drilling.
Well 29~ was drilled from surface to 80 ft with a 19-inch-diameter tri-cone
rock bit.
A 14-inch-outside diameter (OD) surface conductor casing was run to 80 ft
• and cemented in place. The top of the casing was set at ground surface.
After the conductor casing cement hardened, a typical 12.25-inch-
diameter tri-cone long tooth button bit was used to advance the well to a
TD of 1350 ft.
Rock chip samples were separated from drilling fluids in a cyclone
separator and passed over a Shaker table for recovery at 5-ft intervals.
Drilling fluid consisted of clear wa 'r, with a light bentonite and polymer
mud additive.
To prepare the borehole for the first and deepest monitor well installation,
the hole was sealed from 1350 ft (TD) up to 1326 ft with 25 sacks of
bentonite hole plug. The bentonite was place in one vertical lift via a string
of 2.75-inch-OD tremie line composed of nominal 20-ft pipe joints.
Dissolution Zone
The Dissolution Zone well (29~D) was completed with a 10-ft fiberglass,
#20 slot screen at 1309 to 1319 ft near the Dissolution Surface (1334 ft).
The silica sand filter pack was placed from 1301 to 1326 ft.
Bentonite hole plug was placed immediately above the sand filter pack at
1281 to 1301 ft.
The annular interval above the Dissolution Zone well and below the A
Groove installation, from 810 ft to 1281 ft, was sealed with 325 sacks of
Class A Type II cement with ~2% calcium chloride. The cement was
. placed via tremie pipe in four separate vertical lifts.
