BOX 4I4
Paonia, CO 81428
(970) 527-3662
November 3, 2004
Mr. Bob Major
Bureau of Reclamation
Western Colorado Area Office
2764 Compass Drive, Suite f 06
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Re: Bowie Mine Water Discharge
Dear Mr. Major,
In our first visit to the site we saw water being discharged from the mine
into the Deer Trail Ditch and consequently into the Fire Mountain Canal.
This was in mid-April. After communicating with the mine we were assured
that the problem would be remedied.
In September 2004, it came to our attention that new pond (Pond FJ was
built with the spillway day lighting into the canal. Your second visit
established our concerns.
Our main concern is potential quality of water and the potential of
excessive water into the canal.
The Fire Mountain Canal and Reservoir Company recommends that no
water from the Bowie Mine be allowed to enter the canal between Pond
F to the over shoot from Pond B. Also Deer Trail Ditch below Pond B needs
to be cleaned and maintained or piped to eliminate the possibility of
water seeping into the canal. At the spillway of Pond F we feel that the
mine's engineer should design a spillway system That would keep any
water from being discharged into the Canal. We also feel that the mine
should be responsible for the delivery of stock water to fill a decree on the
Stephens Ditch.
Again we appreciate your efforts in this situation. If any further action is
needed on our part, please advise us.
Sincerely,
William Houseweart, President
FlOU-03-2004 04:08PM FRX:970 872 2483 ID: PRGE:001 R=94%
