' per year (in about the fifth year after the mine restarts). The
' exact amount of disposal material will not be known until the
operation begins.

2.4.3 Promosed disposal material specification
The material to be disposed of underground will be required to meet
specifications based on its combustibility. Two aspects are
important: its spontaneous combustion potential and its ability to
support combustion once ignited. The objective of the
specification for the material is to reduce the potential of
' combustion of the backfilled material to acceptable levels when the
material is disposed of in the disposal area of the mine.
The specification of the material cannot be derived at present, as
it requires a relatively large sample of disposal materials. These
will become available only once the excavation has entered the coal
seam, which is expected to take place shortly after mining re-
' commences. However, based on experience, it is expected that the
disposal material will have the following characteristics:
' 1. The material will be wet. This follows from the mining and
disposal technique, both of which will be performed in a
' saturated condition.
' 2. The material will be fine. This follows from the method of
selection of the coal to be disposed of, and the fact that
most of the solids to be disposed of are shales and fine
grained ash. Because the materials are expected to be fine,
they are expected to retain a relatively high moisture content
' (approximately 20t), even when allowed to drain.
' Based on these two factors, it is considered unlikely that either
ignition or sustained combustion will occur.
' Adrian Brown Consultants -10- 1145/900820
1
