• Lr-TRODUCTION
A Class II cultural resource inventory of the Lone Pine Gulch area of the west Elk bfine was
conducted by Western Culrs:al Resource ~fanagemeat, Inc. (WCR:~Q of Boulder, Colorado for
WESTEC of Deaver, Colorado. The project is located south-southwest of Some: set, Colorado
and is on private land. The private land, estimated to cover I08 acres, is administered by
Irlountain Coal Company of Somerset, Colorado (Figures 1 and 2). The inventory consisted of
a road right-of-way which extended from Highway 133 and proceeded up Lone Pine Gulch and
a block area which contained a planned powerline corridor/substation area and an air vent azea.
The road rght-of-way measured 50' on each side of the cea:eaine zxcept in two areas w:sere
tight turns required a wider road area (100' each side of the centerLne). The road rght-of-way
contained approximately 25 acres. The powerline corridor measured 200' on either side of the
centerline and contained approximately I6 acres. The air vent area was a block which contaited
approximately 67 acres.
The purpose of the inventory was to identify, document, and evaluate cultural resources lying
within the study area. Given the location of the study area on predominantly densely vegetated
north-facing slopes, the Class II inventory focused primarily on open areas and exposures likely
to contain cultural resources as well as the existing road right-of-way. The legal locations of
the Class II study area are listed in Table 1.
. Fieldwork was conducted on Apri129, 1993 by Thomas J. Lennon of WCRM, Inc. hit. Lennon
also served as Principal Investigator. Cultural resource records aze on file at the Ofnce of
Archaeology and Historic Preservation, Colorado Historic Society, Denver. Original field notes
aze retained in the files of WCRM, Inc. No artifacts were collected during the study.
•
1
