. ABSTRACT
On April 29, 1994, Thomas J. Lennon of Western Cultural Resource bfanagement, Inc.
(WCR:~f) conducted a CIass II cultural resource inventory of the Lane Pine Gulch area wrich
is part of the West Elk hfine in Gunnison County. Colorado. The cultural resource study area
totaled approximately 103 acres. The inventory consisted of a road rght-oi-way which extended
from Highway 133 and proceeded up Lone Pine Gulch and a block area which contained a
planned powerline corridorisubstation area and an air vent area. The road right-of-:s•ay
measured 50' on each side of the centerline except in two areas where fight turns required a
wider road area (100' each side of the centerline). The road right-of--way cortaned
approximately 25 acres. The powerline corridor measured 200' on either side of the cer.te::ine
and contained approximately 16 acres. The air vent area was a block which contained
approximately 67 acres.
The purpose of the inventory was to identify, document, and evaluate cultural resources lying
within the study area. Given the location of the study area on predominantly densely ve;etated
north-facing slopes, the Class II inventory focused primarily on open areas and exposures likely
_ to contain cultural resources as well as the existing road right-of-way. One historic site, a
homestead (SGN2461), was recorded. The site contained the remains of a homestead dating to
1902. Features associated with the site included: a house depression, outbuilding, depression,
dugout, lumber concentration, and tin can concentration. The site is recommended as not
• National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible and no further work is recommended.
•
iv
