• CASTLE CONCRETE COMPANY
PIKEVIEW QUARRY 77-211
EXHIBIT D
MINING PLAN
The mining plan for the Pikeview Quarry presents a picture of
continued mining on this site for approximately 70 to 80 more years.
Additional lands that have not been affected previously will be mined,
but most of the mining will occur on the previously disturbed lands.
Therefore, the Pikeview Quarry is a long-lived mining operation and will
be operated well into the next century.
HISTORY OF MINE - Most of the area occupied by the Pikeview Quarry was
mined by the Peter Kiewit Co. in the 1950's and 1960. The site was used
as the primary source of aggregate to build the United States Air Force
• Academy. Castle Concrete Company leased the quarry in 1969 from the
Golden Cycle Corporation and purchased it in 1974. Since then all
material removed has been done by Castle Concrete Company.
It is notable that virtually all the present quarry area was
mined prior to Castle Concrete Company entering the area. Although
Castle Concrete Company assumes the responsibility for the reclamation
of most, if not all, the area it is important that previous mining was
quite obviously done with little or no thought given effectively to
reclaiming the site to a subsequent beneficial use. In some respects
Castle Concrete's assumption of that responsibility is equivalent to
assuming responsibility for the actions of a rogue white elephant.
Effective reclamation of the site in its current condition would be a
• virtual impossibility and the only way such reclamation can effectively
be achieved is to remine the area to produce better grades and some
P-D-1
