Re vegetation - In the long-term the primary emphasis of the mining
• relative to reclamation is to produce a better topographic
configuration. on a piece of land that has been seriously disturbed by
previous mining. Regrading will produce a surface mantle suitable for
the revegetation which will bring the site to its full utility. As a
side issue of the revegetation an attempt will be made to produce some
visual illusions that will produce a better scene.
The most difficult part of the revegetation will be the
relatively steep slopes of the quarry area. These slopes will present
some temporarily unstable conditions until the material settles well,
but these should not be of great importance and will not hinder
revegetation efforts. Droughty material may also occur as a consequence
of the slope, but the easterly aspect will greatly aid in this regard.
• If the aspect were south or west revegetation of the slopes would be very
difficult and would undoubtedly require expensive mulches and possibly
some irrigation, both of which would produce their own set of problems
in subsequent maintenance of the vegetation.
Preparation of the Seed Bed - After an area has been graded and the i
contour ditches constructed, the plant growth medium would be
fertilized by first gently ripping the phosphorous into the soil
followed by spreading the nitrogen on the roughened surface. Any gross
roughness remaining would be removed by lightly dragging the area.
The area would then be ready for seeding.
Seeding - During the month of April seeding would be accomplished
as this is the best for utilizing the reasonably reliable spring rains. ~
Species to be seeded will be:
•
P-P-10
