<br />terracing is necessary to prevent, as much as possible, the undermining <br />• of forested land to the west. The backwall of the first terrace will <br /> be sloped so as to blend with the steep slope above. The second <br />terrace backwall will have to be near vertical and approximately 40 to <br />60 feet high. Sloping this area would produce excessively steep slopes <br />and a high risk of sliding. Although Castle Concrete would very much <br />desire producing a slope that would blend with the other areas, such <br />is not viewed as being physically safe. Some of the detrimental visual <br />effects of such a procedure can be, in time, ameliorated with vegetation <br />planted on the terrace steps. It is fully expected that as mining <br />progresses into this area many years hence there may be other procedures <br />that could be used. If such is the case, the plan will be altered <br />accordingly, but until then the severe slope conditions created by the <br />previous operator dictate such a procedure as the safest although not <br />• the most visually satisfying. <br />The lower areas of the quarry where the industrial park will <br />he located have a much more gradual slope and will be comparatively <br />level over many areas. <br />[7a ter control will be obtained through a combination of <br />dissipators, catchment dams, contour terraces, catchment basins, and <br />the aforementioned terraces near the top of the quarry. Major water <br />control measures are fully described in the water resources exhibit. <br />No toxic producing or acid forming materials occur in the <br />area. Therefore control measures for such substances are not needed <br />Packfilling occurs in two ways. One aspect is not strictly <br /> backfillina but has the same effect. f'?hen materials are e:ctracted <br />• and piled with a caterpillar the limestone tends to become thoroughly <br /> crushed by the repeated passes of the caterpillar.
