RECOM~ATICNS:
Mr. Thorne indicates that in the reclamation process, the spoil material
will be moved back on the mined areas, and slopes dressed in such a manner
as to conform as nearly as practicable to adjacent contours. 9vailable
topsoil will be spread on the surface. The slopes will be left £lat enough
for operations of seeding equipment, probably not exceeding 4:1, and in
most areas flatter than that.
The following grass seed mixture will be suitable £or seeding all three
sites ezami.ned:
Side-oats grams 3.0 lbs. pure live seed per acre
Little bluestem 2.0 lbs, pure live seed per acre
Western wheatgrass 5.0 lbs, pure live seed per acre
Blue grams .5 lbs. pure live seed per acre
10.5 lbs. pure live seed per acre
Seed should be drilled preferably in April or May and should be placed about
1~2 inch deep.
Straw mulching is recommended, applied at the rate of two ton per acre'and
crimped into the soil. Mulching should be done following the seeding opera-
tions. Irrigation should not be necessary to achieve establishment in this
azea.
If adjacent lands are being used for grazing, it will be essential to fence
newly seeded areas until grasses are well established. The landowner will
find it advantageous to protect these areas from grazing for several years.
-2-

Q l/f
~~ ~'~'Cl ~ V ~~t'G~f~ ~
