CO 80909 <br />March 29, 1978 <br />Inventory Area Recommendations <br />Robinson Brick & Tile Company <br />Apache Clay Pits <br />Assisted by Donald E. Nielsen <br />On March 29, 1978, I`ir. Cliff Thorne o£ Robinson Brick & Tile Compar~y and I <br />inspected the three clay mine sites identified as Apache #9-2, Apache ~, <br />and Apache ',~9-Red. These sites are located southwest of Calhan in Sections <br />16, 20, and 21 ; Township 12S; Range 6241. <br />SOILS• <br />Soils on Apache #9-2 and Apache ~9 have been mapped in the E1 Paso County <br />Soil Survey as Louviers cobbly clay loam on 5 to !a0 percent slopes. The <br />surface layer typically is a grayish brown cobbly eiltg clay loam about 5 <br />inches thick. The surface layer is about 60 percent cobble .and atone. The <br />underlying layer is silty clay to silty clay loam. Shale or clay is at a <br />depth of about 1~0 inches. <br />Soils on the Apache ~9-Red site is mapped as a Truckton sandy loam on 3 to <br />9 percent slopes. At this site the mapping unit coataine inclusions of <br />Blakeland loamy sand, Bresser sandy loam and small areas of arkosic sand- <br />stone, shale, or clay at depths o£ less than 40 inches. The top soil is <br />generally a brown sandy loam about 5 inches thick. T'ne subsoil ranges from <br />sandy loam to sandy clay loam and is about 16 inches thick. <br />VEG~"'TATION: <br />Vegetation on the Apache ~9-2 and Apache ~ consists primarily of grasses <br />consisting mainly of little bluestem, big bluestem, silo-oats grams, west- <br />ern wheatgrass, and blue grams. <br />Vegetation on the Apache ~`9-Red site is also primarily brasses consisting <br />mainly of blue grams, mountain muhly, and three a•.m; with lesser amounts of <br />prairie sand.seed, little bluestem, big bluestem, and western wheatgrass. <br />Forbs present on both sites include fringed sage, wora.rood, cactus, sna_ke- <br />rreed, yucca, and Lemont goldenweed and others. <br />Range is the present use of the land surrounding the clay mine sites. Range <br />in tha vicinity is presently in high fair condition. <br /> <br />
