Some hunting ground will be destroyed at the <br />waste disposal site. <br />In general, on a lox to high perturbation scale of 0 to 10, we <br />estimate impact to be 5• <br />(3) GOLDEN EAGLE (Aquila chrysaetos) <br />The golden eagle is commonly referred to as rare by layman, but <br />closer observation by those able to recognize the birds <br />indicates that they are common and often seen in the potential <br />area of impact. The Colorado Division of Wildlife estimates <br />that there are 3.84 individuals per square mile in the area of <br />• concern, but their knowledge of nesting activity is lacking. <br />Four of five nest sites are known from Rio Blanco county but the <br />reproductive activity is unknown. Cur findings of commonality <br />and density concur with the Colorado authorities. In addition, <br />we found an active nest site in the red sandstone cliffs <br />adjacent to the mine portal. <br />The question of disturbance to the nest site, due to <br />construction and mining operations was broached to Dr. Clayton <br />White while we were making cliff searches. In hie opinion and <br />ours, it was felt that it xould not cause the eagles to abandon <br />the nest site. Golden eagles are more tolerant of human <br />activity than is commonly believed. There are two sites known <br />• to us in Utah xhere one can drive right up to and look into the <br />II.H-92 <br />
