DRAFT
The water shall not be drained into work completed or under construction without the consent of the Engineer.
The dewatering operation shall continue until such time that it is safe to allow the water table to rise in the
excavation and upon [he approval by the Engineer.
3.03 STRIPPING -See Section 02100 -Site Preparation
3.04 PLACING EMBANKMENT MATERIALS
The suitability of each part of the foundation for placing embanlmtent materials thereon, and of all materials for
use in embanlanent construction, will be detemtined by the Engineer. No embankment material shall be placed
in the fill area when either the material or the foundation or embanlanent on which it would be placed is frozen.
No brush, roots, sod, or other perishable or unsuitable materials shall be placed in the embankment.
Each load of the material placed in the embatilmtent, whether from excavation for other parts of the work or
from borrow pits, shall be placed in the location designated by the Engineer.
If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the surface of the prepared foundation oz the compacted surface of any layer
of ear[hfill is too dry or smooth to bond properly with the layer of material to be placed thereon, it shall be
moistened and/or worked with harrow, scarifier, or other suitable equipment, in an approved manner to a
sufficient depth [o provide a satisfactory bonding swface before the next succeeding layer of earthfill material
is placed. If in the opinion of the Engineer, [he compacted swface of any layer of the earthfill in place is too
wet for proper compaction of the layer of earthfill material to be placed thereon, it shall be removed; allowed to
dry; or be worked with harrow; scarifier, or other suitable equipment to reduce the moisture content to the
required amount; and then it shall be recompacted before the next succeeding layer of earthfill material is
placed.
The earthfill on each side of any structwes shall be kept at approximately the same level as the placing of the
earthfill progresses, and the stmctwes shall be protected against displacement or other damage.
3.05 MOISTURE AND DENSITY CONTROL
A. Fill Material
The standard optimum moisture content is defined as "that moisture content which will result in a
maximum dry unit weight of the soil when subjected to the Standard Proctor Compaction Test as
described by ASTM D-698." Material represented by the samples tested having a placement moistwe
content less than 2% below standard optimum condition or more than 3% wet of the standard optimum
condition will be rejected and shall be reworked until the moismre content is between these limits.
Additional moisture as required in the opinion of the Engineer maybe applied by sprinkling.
