90
The 1975 SCS soil map was referenced for this updated shop area
• survey. Map units were delineated by relating the soils to land-
forms and topography, geology, drainage patterns, vegetation, and
visible surface features. Map unit names and symbols contained
in the SCS legend (1975) and used later by Fly and Associates
(1979) in the west pit area (Section 25) were retained and cAr-
related to shop area soils. The SCS map unit boundary lines were
transferred to high quality black and white stereo prints that
were flown October 26, 1979. Soil boundaries ~re refined in an
office photo-interpretive study using a mirror stereoscope. The
refined map boundaries were also confirmed by inspecting recent
1:400" photos taken September 30, 1980. Lastly, the refined map-
ping was transferred to a revised and updated 1:400" topographic
base map.
SURVEY RESULTS
Three map units were identified within the field soil survey area
(see E~thibit 9-1). These aze 9904/D2, Fersayo clay loam and sandy
clay loam, 10 to 20$ slopes; 5810/7C-2, Shawano sandy clay loam,
5 to 10$ slopes; and DL, Disturbed Lands Cm;~plex, undifferentiated
slopes. The Shawano and Persayo soils occupy landscape positions
similar to those described above. The Disturbed Lands Complex are
comprised of landscapes previously disturbed by mining activities.
These landscapes may include but are not necessarily limited tD un-
graded spoil piles, abandoned open pits, parking lots, shop buildings,
and roads.
The Persayo and Shawano map unit and series descriptions with lab-
oratory analysis data are found in the Soil Survey Text, Tab 9.
Additional laboratory data determined fmn surface soil samples
collected within the shop area by Seneca Coals, Ltd. and USDA
Soil Conservation Service in 1975 is included as Table 9-2C-1.
The data confirms the "fair" quality rating assigned to the Shawano
soil type according to topsoil suitability guidelines listed in
Tab 9.
