r1
L~
CHAPTER V
PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT
PHYSICAL PLAN
As an irrigation water supply company, the Minnesota Ditch Company operates
Dams, canals, ditches, gates and other physical apparatus. The intent of
the proposed project is to repair only the Minnesota Dam. The Dam is
operated only as an irrigation supply reservoir. It is filled by snowmelt
in the spring and drained for use as irrigation water in the summer.
Although no records are available to substantiate the date, local observers
indicate that the original Dam was constructed approximately 100 years ago.
Interior Department records located in the Forest Service's Paonia Ranger
District office indicate that the first enlargement of the Dam occurred
during the years of 1901 through 1908.
The Department of the Interior granted an easement for the Dam September
30, 1905.
More recently, the Dam was inspected under the National Dam Safety Program.
A report on that inspection dated March 25, 1980 is attached in the
Appendix.
V-i
