r ~•\ United States Soil
'''' Department of Conservation Feb. 11, 1987
~'~~ Agriculture Service 783-2481
Mr. William Tezak
Cr~lorado Quarries
P.4. Box 1389
Canon City, CO. 81212 ~J~. p'_.f }S " Z
Dear Bill, l~hr~3~ 1~'~~
This is in reference to the renewal of the 2 limited impact mine site reclam-
ation plans for sites located in Custer County. The first site is north of State
Highway 96 in Silver Cliff and the second is approximately 1 mile straight north
of Westcliffe and north of the county landfill.
After the area has been banksloped to grades not exceeding 9:1 and topsoil has
been replaced to a depth of 6-8 inches, the following seeding rates are recommended:
Variety Species % in Mixture Rate/Ac. PLS
Arriba Western Wheat 60 9.6 lbs.
Pasture Little Bluestein 20 1.4 lbs.
Redondo Arizona Fescue 20 0.9 lbs.
11.9 lbs/ac PLS*
*PLS=Pure Live Seed= % Purity X % Germination. It may require 15 or more pounds of
bulk seed quantity per acre to equal 11.9 pounds of pure live seed. Seed dealers
should be able to figure this for you.
This seeding rec~ndation is based on drilled rates. If a broadcast method of
seeding is used then the rate will have to be doubled and the seed raked into the
soil. Seed should be planted to a depth of ~ to ~, inches, any deeper than this could
result in lack of adequate germination.
After seeding, the area should be mulched with 4000 lbs/ac. of meadaa hay for
stabilization. Timothy and RedtAp hay would probably be best since there is less of
a chance for them to germinate under dryland conditions. All mulch should be crimped
into the soil to prevent it fran blowing away.
The area should then be protected from people, vehicles and livestock until the
native perennial grasses have become well established. This will take a minimum of
2-3 years. In the meantime, the site should be fenced off to prevent indescriminate
access.
If I can be of any further assistance, please contact my office.
O Tne soil Conaervalion Service Sinc ely
U .a an agency o1 the Page 4
~ DeVenmenl of Agriculture
Alan R.
