Paula Phillips
January 26, 1987
Paqe 3
' The Minnesota Creek flow records (1936-1947) and the Dry Fork and Lick
Creek flow records (1977-1984) are not coincidental. A comparison of the
flows at the North Fork Gunnison River gage near Somerset was made to
determine if the flows for the two periods were similar. A summary of
annual flows at the North Fork Gunnison River gage is presented below:
Annual Flow
' North Fork Gunnison % of Long Term Average
1937-1984 326,000 AF 100%
1936-1947 338,920 AF 104%
1977-1983 373,248 AF 119%
1977 79,270 AF 24%
' 1983 565,100 AF 173%
1984 601,800 AF 185%
' Note that the average flow between the two periods used for correlation
varies by about 10%. However, the 1977-1984 period covered a period of
extremes from a 24% of normal runoff in 1977 to a 185% of normal runoff in
' J 1984.
' Comparisons show average monthly flows for the two periods, after adjust-
ments were made for Paonia Reservoir operations, differed significantly
' during the snowmelt run-off months of April thru July. However, the aver-
age monthly flows for the remainder of the year, including the late irriga-
' tion months when a call is most likely to occur, are within 10 percent of
each other. We expect that the Minnesota Creek Basin would have experienc-
ed a similar flow pattern.
A summary of adjusted monthly flow comparisons is as follows:
Average Average $
Month 1936-1947 1977-1983 Difference
January 3,829 3,517 -8.2
February 3,835 3,696 -1.2
March 7,383 7,343 -0.6
April 48,450 55,291 +14.1
May 135,838 120,343 -11.4
June 83,582 114,130 +36.5
July 23,300 35,823 +53.7
August 8,846 9,753 +10.2
September 6,320 6,487 ~+2.6
October 7,273 6,836 -6.0
November 5,653 5,383 -4.8
December 4,711 4,696 -1.4
....,~~.Y..
