Because the mine area is relatively
small (23.0 acres), a minimum of 10 samples was decided upon
(rather than 15 which is sometimes set). Samples were
collected until sample adequacy was reached. Sample
locations were selected randomly from within the disturbed
area. Random sample locations were drawn from a gridded map
(100 x 100 meter grid). Points were then located in the
field through the use of a compass and pacing. Cover
transects and woody stem quadrats originated from sample
locations (the approximate locations of sample points are
marked on the enclosed map).
TOTAL VEGETATIVE COVER:
Total vegetative cover was estimated using an optical
point frame developed by ESCO Associates. Point sitings
were located along a 50 meter transect stretched out either
northwest, northeast, southwest, or southeast of the sample
location (the direction was randomly selected from the four
possibilities). The 50 points per transect (one point at
each meter interval) comprised a single sample unit. Cover
2
