Section ~79,2p (c) Continued.
• Aquatic biology sampling sites used in 1972 on Fish Creek,
Foidel Creek, Middle Creek and Trout Creek are indicated on
Tablc 68, 1972 Aquatic Biology Sampling Site Locations.
•
Fish Creek. 1975 Investigations. The numbers and kinds of fish
captured at each Fish Crcek Station are given in Table 69, Numbers
and Kinds of Fish Captured at Each Station on Fish Creek in August,
1975. Very few fish were captured at any of the stations, and those
present were mostly younE individuals. The deteimtir.ation of the
specific cause or causes for this apparently poor standing crop of
fish in Fish Creek would require a more detailed field and labora-
tory study. No water quality data for this creek are available,
but permanent aquatic habitat, including pools, riffles, and some
cover, was present and food does not appear *o be unusually scarce
(See Table 59, Numbers and Kinds of Benthic Macroinvertebratcs
Collected in the Surber Bottom Sample in July, August and September,
1975 at Each Station on Fish Creek.
Of the three speices of minnows captured in Fish Creek, the Speckled
Dace (Rhinichthys osculus) was the only one captured at all three
stations. The Speckled Dace is native to Colorado and generally
common in the swift parts of small to moderate-sized streams,
Beckman (1974). The rain food items of this minnow are Benthic
invertebrates, although it is somewhat omnivorous and consumes
plant material also (Baxter and Simon (1970); Carlander (1969)).
Benthic invertebrates, especially the orders Diptera, Ephemeroptera,
and Trichoptera, are coimnon in Fish Creek (See Table 59, Numbers
and I:inds of Benthic Macreinvertebratcs Ccllected i« the Surber
Bottom Sample in July, August and September, 1975 at Each Station
on Fish Creek) and probably constitute the main food source for
minno:as in this creek.
Foidel Creek. No fish were captured by dip netting at the upper
• Foidel Creek Station but nine fish were captured at the lower
779-235
