Species and their adaptability pertain only to BLM lands in the San
Luis kesource Area.
lI. Seed Mix - Over 8600' Elevation:
A. Same factors as I. above differing only in that the species are
adapted to a higher elevation and greater moisture regime.
III. Drilling Sped:
A. Drill with two boxes to separate chaffy from fine seeds. Frefer a
rangeland disc drill. The CRP Program at SCS has, however, brought
about some new equipment.
B. Prefer drilling over broadcasting. Placement of the seed is
ertremely important and hating polyacrylamide with it makes
placement with a drill paramount.
IV. Plulch and I•Ioisture Relations:
A. Using straw has too many problems and is very costly, brings in
weeds, is very time consuming (purchase, delivery to site, handling
on site, chopping and spreading is time consuming and very
dangerous, crimping, etc.) decomposers, microbes and microfanna, tie
up nutrients needed by growing vegetation, soaked straw ties up
moisture, decomposition by products often form hard pan situations
when the slime dries, etc.
B. Polyacrylamide is recommended at 80 pounds per acre, however it is
applied, by those who Sall it. Placement, again, is paramount and
greatly lessens the quantity required. The 10 pound broadcast
amount with fertilizer will help trap the occasional convection
showers, take up dissolved nutrients, and readily release moisture
and nutrient to plant roots, even the sprouts. The 5 pounds drilled
quantity will do the same thing, only it is immediately with the
germinating plant seeds. Both placements will help to Y.eep the
subsoil's and tcpsoil's moisture "together". The minimum rate is
fifteen (15) pounds, but up to eighty (80) pounds would be welcomed
if anyone wants to pay the price.
C. Growing a cover crop takes a season and may waste soil moisture here
in our dry land areas. k~orks great on farmland going into CRP.
WorY,s good in late summer plantings as long as annuals are used,
which will die in the fall frosts, revegetation drilling would occur
the following spring. Doesn`t replace any other practice, just
helps stabilize the environment temporarily.
y. Fertilizer:
A. Use of a Prell fertilizer is tremendously better than a crystalline
batch mix. Each Prell size has a homogenous nutrient content, equal
-22-
