n
u
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECLAMATION PLAN
Backfilling

After the initial cut in which overburden is deposited to one
side, this is the process by which overburden from each suc-
ceeding cut is deposited directly into the previously mined
cut.
Grading
This process insures that the backfill is levelled to gradients
that are conducive to revegetation, erosion prevention, and
meet specifications promulgated in the rules and regulations
of the Mined Land Reclamation Act.
Topsoiling
Studies indicate that saving and redistributing approximately
3-6 inches of firm, selected topsoils will support revegetation.
Topsoil in areas to be mined will be stockpiled or redistri-
buted in sufficient depths on areas which have been regraded.
Revegetation
TREE AND SHRUB PLANTING PRACTICES
SPECIES TO BE USED: Soil, exposure, plant hardiness, flooding
tolerance and other special requirements will be considered when
selecting species. Plantings which do not adapt to the site will
very likely fail, or growth and vigor will be reduced. Poor
quality plantings, which are insect and disease vulnerable will
result. NOTE: See Dominant Species List.
GRASS SEEDING
SPECIES TO BE USED: Soil type, available moisture and reclamation
land use will determine grass species and mixtures of species
B-7
