v'
Results
In areas of good soil on the upper part of this slope a very
good stand of slender wheatgrass is established (Photograph 24 ).
In other areas of the upper part of this slope the soils are poor
and a thin stand of grasses has resulted. Photographs 25 and 26
showing the lower portion of the slope were taken in the fall of
1980 and in ,trine of 1981, respectively. The cover m this portion
of the slope is 50-60% and is composed of slender wheatgrass,
western wheatgrass, smooth brome, Indian ricegrass, aid inter-
mediate wheatgrass.
Survival of the Native Plants tubelings is no higher than
5%. In areas of poor grass ground cover on the upper slope, a few
oaks and currants are surviving. Otherwise, in areas of good
grass cover there is no evidence of shrub tubeling survival.
Recommendations
The Northern 1fl mine complex has now been fenced to eIimi-
nate grazing problems so the m ly recommendation is the addition
of a high nitrogen fertilizer in the spring. The addition of the
fertilizer is especially important to the upper slopes where soil
fertility is noticeably poor. The lower slope can get by with a
much lower rate of fertilization which can be eliminated in me or
two years.
Diversion Ditch Above Portal
Physical Characteristics
This diversion ditch slopes gradually from its south end to
a point above the portal area and then drops steeply to the sedi-
ment ponds below. The south end was cut across the steep hillside
of the FF seam search area. Where the ditch cuts across this hill-
side both the ins lope and-outslope are very steep and average
approximately 30 feet in length. On the remainder of the ditch
the inslope and outslope are not as steep nor as long. The plant
growth medium is a mixture of rock, subsoil, and a Iittle topsoil.
Implementation
mix:
This ditch was seeded in October of 1979 with the following
Western Wheatgrass 8
Slender Wheatgrass 8
Streambank Wheatgrass 2
Intermediate Wheatgrass4
Sherman Big Bluegrass 2
