<br />NORTFERN #1 MINE <br />FF Seam Search Area <br />Physical Characteristics <br />The FF seam search area is a Large, steep, southeasterly <br />facing hillside that was bladed clear of vegetation. On most of <br />the hillside remaining soils are relatively good quality although <br />on some of the upper parts of the hill both the topsoil and sub- <br />soil were bladed away. <br />Implementation <br />The upper part of this hillside was seeded and mulched with <br />excelsior by Northern Coal personnel in the fall of 1978. The <br />seed mix used was composed primarily of smooth brome and wheat- <br />grasses. The area was reseeded in October of 1979 with the <br />fallowing mix: <br />Western Wheatgrass 10 <br />Slender Wheatgrass 10 <br />Streambank Wheatgrass 5 <br />Thickspike Wheatgrass 5 <br />Sherman Big Bluegrass 3 <br />The area was raked after seeding. Native Plants, Inc. shrub <br />tubelings were also planted on this slope at the following rate: <br />Rabbitbrush 300 <br />Snowberry 400 <br />Serviceberry 200 <br />Gambel Oak 200 <br />Bitterbrush 60 <br />Chokecherry 175 <br />Rase 75 <br />Mountain Mahogany 100 <br />Currant 100 <br />Management <br />This area has been subject to intensive grazing since it was <br />seeded in 1978. The Northern #1 area was completely fenced in <br />November 1980 to elinunate grazing on any of the mining <br />disturbances. Fertilizer at a rate of 120 lbs/acre of 30-10-0 has <br />been applied in the spring of 1980 and 1981. <br />
