Kerr Coal will be mining to the maximum physical and economical depths
. practicable utilizing most appropriate available engineering and envi-
ronmental technologies.
Reclamation Efforts and Recognition
Kerr Coal is deeply concerned about the protection and preservation of
land and environmental resources on land on which coal mining is occur-
ring, together with ancilliary socioeconomic factors. It is Kerr Coal's
objective to preserve land values, and to find new and better ways to
improve agricultural and aesthetic values.
Reclamation of surface disturbed lands was initiated at the Marr Strip
lil in 1977 when the first backEill, topaoiling, and reseeding operations
took place. With the cooperation of the local Soil Conservation Dis-
trict and the BLM, 48.3 acres of previously disturbed area were drill
seeded during 1977, 1978 and 1979. The preliminary results of reclama-
tion and revegetation in 1977, 1978 and 1979, are encouraging. Kerr
Coal is voluntarily reclaiming lands disturbed by previous mining opera-
• tions.
Kerr Coal works closely with numerous governmental agencies, which are
involved in research dedicated to the improvement of reclamation and
environmental enhancement techniques, including the Bureau of Land
Management and the Soil Conservation Service. Extensive research has
been conducted on soils, overburden, vegetation, wildlife, weather,
hydrology, water quality, air quality, and reclamation.
Kerr Coal employe an Environmental Coordinator, a Range Scientist,
several Environmental Technicians, and up to ten seasonal employees to
plan, implement, and supervise the reseeding and land restoration pro-
grams.
Desctiptlbn bf Organization of Peimit Application
Kerr Coal has carefully chosen the format for this application after
consultation with representatives of both the MLRB and the OSM. The
. application is arranged to provide for easy reference to specific sec-
tions of the Permanent Regulations. Where applicable, cross references
-10-
