The drum <br /> shall be water or sand-and-water ballasted. Each knob <br />1 shall project a minimum of seven inches from the drum. <br /> The projected face area of each tamping kno~ and the <br />i number of and spacing of the knobs shall be such that the <br /> total weight of the ballasted roller, when distributed <br /> over one row of knobs, will result in a minimum pressure <br /> of 500 lbs per sq inch, but not to exceed 750 ~bs per sq <br /> inch. The roller shall be equipped with cleaning fingers <br /> so designed .and attached as to prevent an accumulation of <br /> material between the tamping feet. <br /> Types of Tamping Rollers <br /> <br /> The roller shall be self-propelled or pu led by a <br /> crawler-type tractor of sufficient power to operate the <br /> roller at a speed of approximately 3 mph. The design and <br /> operation of the roller will be subject to approval of <br /> the Engineer, and the Contractor shall at any time make <br /> <br /> N-18 <br /> <br />
