The two soil types located on the Creig pit have few
inherent problems other than steepness of slope, providing
adequate moisture is available. The XTO-EF, Terrace edges
are described as a Rocky Foothills Range Site. The R8-CD
Falfa Loam soils are described as a Loamy Foothill Range
Site. Both of these range sites are similar in vegetative
' composition.
The site is dominated by a dense stand of pinyon and
Juniper trees. The understory vegetation is relatively
sparse and low in production. The shrubs are big sagebrush,
black sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, mountain mahogany,
rabbitbrush, snakeweed, fendler bush and cliffrose. The grasses
' include western wheatgrass, junegrass, squirreltail, galleta,
blue grams and cheatgrass. The forb plants include scarlet
f globemellow, western yarrow, Indian paintbush, asters, buck-
wheats and others.
All of the plants indicate that the area has received
heavy usage by deer and cattle. Cover in the site is adequate
for most wildlife species present but forage and browse pro-
duction is very low.
Reclamation procedures for this site should emphasize _
soil replacement,'.slope and revegetation. All disturbed sites
should be sloped back to at least a two to one slope or greater.,
The disturbed sites should have topsoil replaced at a minimum
depth of six inches. 12 inches of topsoil replacement vrould
be more desirable. RevegeLation emphasis should encourage re-
placementof the native plants listed above if seed stock is
available. Other seedings could include desirable plants such
as:
~ Western wheatgrass - This grass should be ideal for reseeding
the steeper slopes. It is a native grass
' has very good soil erosion control and ig
drought resistant. Drill at a rate of
16 pounds per acre of pure live seed at
a depth of ~ inch. Use varieties Arriba
or Barton.
' Sanfoin - This is a non-bloating legume that is
drought resistant and adQ.pted to this
area. This plant will help supply nitrogen
into the soil and will supply forage for
• livestock and wildlife. Drill at a rate
of 12 pounds per acre of pure live seed
at a depth of '~ inch. Use variety esKi:
