p,~~la,;;,l Correspondence Only
w~~
.,

T0: Rey 'faliafcrro
FROM: Don Bogart ~~
DATE: January 6, ]977
.lanuary 6, 1977, I visited the Andesite Rock Company mine above Lyons.
Tlris mine has been operating for several years. The lease that they are
operating on consists of H2O acres; however, probably an area of 80 to
IliO acres is all that will ever be mined. The estimated life of the mine
is projected to he for twenty more years. It is located on the Srnirh
St. Vrain River; however, there is no encroachment on the river itself
and since the rock is all mined in a dry state, there are no problems
with effluents or other drainage wastes to contaminate the stream.
fbe operation consists of blasting from the face of an almost perpendicular
hluff, then hauling it to the railroad in Lyons or by truck to various
sites.
The steep slopes have scattered cover of mountain mahogany and skunkbush
and an occasional clump of grass. Some deer are known to inhabit the
are;,; but the slope is extremely steep and generally northerly slope, so
. not tuo much use is made of the browse species by deer. Otherwise tiierc
is insignificant use of wildlife.
What little topsoil there is had been stockpiled and will be replarcd at
the end of the operation and reseeded to SCS specifications.
'there are no known threatened or endangered species in the area.
DB:cp
•~

STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
