• and site description must be corrected (Jan. 1980 report), e.g.
5RT139 and 5RT145. All site forms and descriptions should be
checked for agreement.
--Site maps. If testing was conducted, show the locations of
test pits. Adequate for all except Jan. 1980 - Inadequate:
No site boundaries (the site dimensions are known but where these
are located on the earth's surface is not); unlabeled contours,
no datum or legend - contours on site map conflict with
topography, for example, compare site maps and topography of
sites 5RT139, 5RT142, 5RT145, 5RT146, and SRT147.
The following points have been corrected and the amended
site forms and maps are enclosed. Please note, site maps
reflect topography in greater detail than USGS 7.5' quads.
--There should have been a discussion of the presence of unknown
sites in the Jan. 1980 report and the statement "intuitive
assessment of site probability" should have been explained.
The statement, "intuitive site probability" is intended to
mean that because of professional experience certain areas
are felt to be more likely to contain buried and surface
cultural materiel than other areas. These areas include
• flood plains, terraces, and level areas near water where
the surface is usually hidden underneath dense vegetation.
The presence of unknown sites or buried sites was
considered on the survey by thoroughly checking arroyo
cuts, rodent backdirt and ant hills. However, we are
aware that the possibility of unexposed sites does exist
within the study area.
--The presence of a Paleo-Indian point 30 cm below the surface at
SRT142 may be significant and should be investigated.
The Paleo point referred to was found on the surface -
"The Paleo point was located on the surface adjacent to
test unit III" (Hand 1980: pp. 61).
C ~
J
