INTRODUCTION <br />5RT139 is a Paleo-Indian Cody Complex site that <br />possibly includes a McKean component. It is located <br />primarily in the NEB of Section 11, TSN, R87W, Routt County, <br />Colorado, on land previously permitted for coal mining by <br />Seneca Coals, Ltd. <br />The site will receive 100% impact by topsoil removal <br />and subsequent coal removal in the late summer and fall of <br />1980. <br />A meeting with the State Historic Preservation Officer, <br />and representatives of Peabody Coal and Western Cultural <br />Resource Management determined that the site was significant <br />and that mitigation of impact should occur. <br />PROPOSED MITIGATION PLAN <br />This mitigation plan is designed to occur in two <br />stages. The first stage will consist of the excavation of <br />two 2 x 2 meter units, located on two hearths encountered <br />during testing. Stage two will consist of monitoring top- <br />soil removal by road grader. <br />Excavation <br />Excavation of the two 2 x 2 meter units will be by <br />shovel and trowel in 10 centimeter levels until the hearths <br />are uncovered.
