General Topographic Setting: Situated on an old river terrace created bythe Gunnison River and possibly
the Colorado River. These two rivers converge approximately 4500ft to the northwest. What appears to
be an ancient confluence is only 2000ft north of the project. Numerous mesas and canyons dissect the
surroundingterrairt. Two small unnamedintermittentdrainagesbisecttheprojectarea(easttowest)through
the middle and southern end of the parcel. At the time of the survey both were flowing.
Current Land Use: Mostly vacant, but some storage by the City.
19. Flora: Basically barren to the north and west. Overgrazing by dairy cows has removed most of the
vegetation. Eastern and southern portions vary from thin grasses and forbs on higher Bound, to thick
grasses and forbs, with scattered trees and shrubs along the two drainages.
20. Soils/Geology: This river terrace is covered with unconsolidated alluvial deposits consisting of numerous
river pebbles and cobbles with thin silty sand intermixed. Deposition is much deeper along the two small
drainages that appear to have been regularly impacted via flash flooding in the past. Underlying geology
consists of sedimentary rock of Cretaceous age Dakota and Burro Canyon formations (Tweto 1979).
21. Ground Visibility: Visibility ranged from 100% in the areas where livestock had grazed to 10% along the
drainages. Conditions were very damp at the time of fieldwork, the drainages were flowing and vegetation
was thick because of this.
22. Comments:
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23.
