r <br />Seed used in permanent revegetation operations will besite-adapted, improved varieties and <br />cul[ivars of native grasses, forbs and shrubs. Tested seed for the current year is required and <br />is subject to the approval of BLM's authorized representative. Copies of the seed labels will be <br />furnished to the BLM. Based upon availability, seed will be selected for use in the following <br />order of preference: 1) certified named varieties, 2) named varieties, and 3) common seed. <br />When common seed is used, sources from the same general locality will be used whenever <br />possible. Seed from more distant sources may be used as dictated by availability, with care <br />being taken to match climatic zones to the extent necessary and possible. <br />Seedbeds will be prepared to facilitate seedling germination and establishment. When native <br />plant species are used predominately in revegetation efforts, the requirements for seedbed <br />preparation will be geared to their germination and establishment. Seedbeds will be left in a <br />rough surface condition whenever possible. Areas will be seeded as soon as possible after <br />completion of soil reconstruction. If the soil surface becomes encrusted or excessively sealed <br />prior to seeding operations, appropriate agricultural practices will be used to alleviate crusting. <br />Physical soil manipulation and revegetation operations (particularly those with linear physical <br />characteristics) will be performed on the contour to the fullest extent possible to minimize <br />potential surface erosion. When contour furrowing is utilized for surface roughening, it will be <br />performed immediately prior to seed application. Contour furrows will be placed as previously <br />described in Section 3.0. Specific cultural practices that promote the establishment and survival <br />of seeded forbs and shrubs will be employed where practicable, subject to [he approval of the <br />BLM. For example, if seeded, sagebrush would need to be appiied separately and in <br />geographically separate portions of the reclamation area in order to rmnimize competition from <br />more aggressive species and thereby optimize its establishment. <br />Seed mixtures will be applied at the approximate rate indicated in the respective tables. <br />Application rates may he varied with the BLM's approval as the germination, establishment and <br />erowth of previous seedings are observed and evaluated. When the bulk seeding rate is small <br />(i.e., less than 10 pounds/acre 1. an extender may be added to aid in distribution and coverage. <br />A commonly used extender is cracked com, but other materials may be used providing they are <br />environmentally benign. When extenders are used, they will be thoroughly mixed with the <br />seed prior to commencement of seeding operations. <br />Seed mixtures may be divided into submixtures based on their physical characteristics. <br />Commonly, up to three submixtures may be used. The purpose of the submixtures is to group <br />the seed types to enhance the seeding equipment's ability to distribute them evenly and [o a <br />lesser extent to group species with similar germination requirements. Subnuxtures normally <br />include: l) medium to large, smooth seeds, 2) seeds with specialized adaptations that represent <br />mechanical inhibitors to standard seeding processes, and 3) extremely small seed. The "normal <br />seed" in the first group usually does not require special handling and may be planted using <br />standard drill or broadcasting equipment. The second group represents seed that has a variety <br />of appendages or specialized coatings that interfere with seed flow through a standard drill or <br />broadcast seeder. This type of seed is normally applied using equipment that is fitted with <br />specialized picker wheels or other adaptations designed to ensure the smooth, even tlow of <br />seed through the seeder. Because exvemely small seed will differentially settle as it is agitated <br />by machine movement during the seeding operation, it may be desirable to separate it from <br />larger seeds and apply it through a separate seed box or separate seeding operation. <br />Seed mixtures will be distributed as evenly as possible over the area being revegeta[ed. Seed <br />drills or broadcasters will be calibrated prior to the initiation of seeding operations. Seeding <br />operations will be pertormed during the normal seeding period for the types of species being <br />planted. When cool season species comprise the majority of the seed mixture, planting will <br />American Soda.
