<br />culverts are used, particular attention will be given to providing adequate slope to ensure that <br />installations are self-cleaning since natural sediment loads are high and culverts are easily <br />plugged. Channel linings in road drainage features will be specified and placed as necessary to <br />control erosion and sedimentation (Figure 12). Channel linings that may be used individually <br />or in combination include soil, vegetation, geotextile fabrics or rock rip-rap depending upon <br />Flow velocities and channel configuration. <br />Water bars may be used to protect roads from erosion during operational use, and during <br />restoration and reclamation. When used, water bars will be located to take advantage of low <br />points or dips in the road surface. Their outlets will avoid loose fills and will discharge to <br />stable areas whenever possible. Water spreaders will be used at the outlet ends when <br />necessary. Typical spacing for water bars based on road slope and erosion hazard are provided <br />in Table 4. <br />Inspection and maintenance of road drainage features will be performed periodically and <br />following significant runoff events to identity and correct problem areas. Maintenance and <br />repair work will be prioritized and performed in a timely, workmanlike manner. Problem or <br />maintenance areas which present the greatest risk of erosion or sedimentation will receive <br />higher scheduling priorities. <br />Following closure of each mining panel, reclamation activities will include the removal and <br />:estoration of road corridors. When roads are retired their surfacing materials will be salvag°d <br />and recycled within the project area. Then they will be graded, topdressed and revegetated to <br />support the postmining land use. Culverts and other structures that are no longer required for <br />drainage will be removed and reused on future development or disposed of accordingly if they <br />are damaged. <br />Particul:u care will be taken in final road reclamation to prevent future encroachment by ATVs <br />and other vehicles onto Thirteenmile Tongue habitats in the vicinity of known populations of <br />the federally threatened plant species. During final restoration, access barriers to these roads <br />will be incorporated and constructed in an effort to render them physically impassable to ATVs. <br />During final reclamation, all roadbeds, except those that the BLM expressly agrees are to be left <br />to satisfy wildlife-oriented reclamation objectives, will be recontoured and reclaimed in a <br />manner that deters or otherwise precludes further function or use as vehicular access. This <br />may involve transplanting woody plant materials to visually break up or otherwise disguise <br />linear features that could potentially provide for vehicle access or use. <br />4.5 WELL FIELD (MINING PANELS) <br />The well field will be disturbed for well pad development and associated pumping facilities, <br />collection pipelines, utilities and access roads. The sequence of activities normally occurring <br />during mining panel development is as follows: <br />l) Erosion and sedimentation control measures will be implemented; <br />2) Soil resource salvage operations will be conducted; and <br />3) Access roads, well pads and associated support facilities will be constructed and interim <br />erosion and sediment controls will be implemented. <br />American Soda.
