M03086GE <br />testing during construction and your budget reflect these provi- <br />sions. <br />It is difficult to predict if unexpected subsurface conditions <br />will be encountered during construction. Since such conditions may <br />be found, we suggest that the owner and the contractor make provi- <br />sions in their budget and construction schedule to accommodate <br />unexpected subsurface conditions. <br />3.1 Fill Considerations <br />It is our understanding that the proposed development will <br />include compacted fill. The quality of compacted fill will depend <br />on the type of material used as fill, fill lift thickness, fill <br />moisture condition and compactive effort used during construction <br />of the structural fill. Engineering observation and testing of <br />fill is essential as an aid to safeguard the quality and perfor- <br />mance of the fill. <br />Testing of the fill normally includes in-place moisture content <br />and dry density tests to indicate the relative compaction of the <br />placed fill as it is constructed. We recommend that your budget <br />include provisions for observation and testing of fill during <br />construction. <br />Testing of the compacted fill material should include tests of <br />J the moisture content and density of the fill material placed and <br />compacted prior to placement of additional fill material. We <br />suggest that a reasonable number of density tests of the fill <br />material can best be determined on a site, material and constructi- <br />on basis although as a guideline we suggest one test per about each <br />300 to 500 square feet of each lift of fill material. Utility <br />trench backfill may need to be tested about every 100 linear feet <br />1 of lift of backfill. <br />4.0 LIMITATIONS <br />It is the owner's and the owherls representatives' responsibility <br />to read this report and become familiar with the recommendations <br />and suggestions presented. We should be contacted if any questions <br />arise concerning the geotechnical engineering aspects of this <br />project as a result of the information presented in this report. <br />} This report is based on assumed subsurface conditions at each <br />proposed site reviewed and does not include subsurface explora- <br />tions. It is our opinion that subsurface conditions may exist <br />1 which were not included in our slope stability analysis.
