PERMANENT STOPPINGS <br />1. All ventilating devices such as stoppings, overcasts, under- <br />casts and shaft partitions shall be constructed of substantial <br />• and incombustible material, installed in a workman-like manner, <br />and maintained in a condition to serve the purpose for which <br />they were intended, The exposed wood used to wedge a stopping, <br />overcast or undercast does not have to be covered with a seal- <br />ant on side opposite the sealant application as long as a fire- <br />retardant material is applied. Overcast wing walls may be <br />built using metal Kennedy stoppings or wooden squeeze seal <br />blocks as long as both sides of the wood are covered with an <br />approved sealant or a fire-retardant material. <br />2, Permanent stoppings shall be erected between the intake and <br />return aircourse and shall be maintained to and including the <br />third connecting crosscut outby the faces of the entries. Per- <br />manent dry stacked block stoppings that will exceed two years <br />in life will be sealed on both sides with an approved construc- <br />tion type sealant, Dry stacked block stoppings with less than <br />two years' life will be sealed on one side with an approved <br />non-construction type sealant, Metal Kennedy stoppings may be <br />used between the intake and return regardless of mining life of <br />. the area. Whenever the third connecting crosscut is broken <br />through, work shall be started on building the stopping as soon <br />as possible and shall be continued in a reasonable and diligent <br />manner until completed. Similarly, whenever a belt move is <br />completed, temporary brattice shall be installed immediately <br />and work shall be started on building the permanent stoppings <br />as soon as possible and shall be continued in a diligent manner <br />until completed. All permanent block stoppings may be sealed <br />on only one side with a non-construction type sealant for 10 <br />stoppings from the face to allow for final sealing with appro- <br />priate type sealant of several stoppings at once. <br />3. Metal Kennedy stoppings or dry Stacked block stoppings covered <br />with an approved non-construction type sealant on one side may <br />be used between the belt haulageway and intake air courses. <br />The exposed wood used to wedge a stopping does not have to be <br />covered with sealant on opposite side.
