Gunnison Mine Surface Water Quality
The following discussion and data tables represent surface water quality
samples taken on selected dates from 1975 through 1978 on the North Fork of
the Gunnison River at ARCO's Mt. Gunnison Bear Mine adjacent to Western Slope
Carbon's permit area. The following material is taken directly from ARCO's
recent mine permit application.
2.8.1.3 Surface Water Quality
Surface water quality samples have been taken at six gauging stations
installed by Atlantic Richfield Company and at three supplemental locations.
The locations of the supplemental sites are the East Fork of Minnesota Creek
above the South Prong confluence, North Fork of the Gunnison River above the
• mouth of Sylvester Gulch, and the North Fork of the Gunnison River below the
Bear Mine. Locations of the surface water quality sampling sites are shown
on Exhibit 2.8.1. E.
The results of the water quality analysis are presented in Tables 2.8.1.x,
2.8.1.L, and 2.8.1.M. The water quality data have been compared to recommended
Colorado Water Quality Standards (Colorado Water Quality Control Commission,
personal communication, 1977) for recreational, aquatic life, agricultural,
and water supply uses. A surrrtnary of those parameters which exceeded recommended
Colorado water quality standards for surface waters are shown, along with a
sampling date, on Table 2.S.1.N. Even if exceeded, these standards should not
limit the use of these waters or place additional limits on discharges into the
water. The standards are established by the State of Colorado principally as
guidelines to the water quality recommended for various uses. The comparisons
to these standards are intended to provide only an indication of water quality.
