Alamosa, CO 81101
Dear Mr. Ungefug:

.„
~~1'
Attached is the soils map and descriptions of the soils present at the King Pit
gravel oE~eration. As you can notice, the MtD map unit is a complex of Mount Home
and Saguache Soils. Both have very limited topsoil, but approximately 6" to 12"
should be removed and stockpiled. Stockpiled topsoil should be seeded to prevent
wind and water erosion and encroachment of weeds. (See attached seeding plan.)
When mining operations are concluded for a portion of the area no slopes should
exceed 3:1 south and west facing slopes should be 4:1 or even flatter. Natural
drainage ways should be returned to pre-mining conditions as much as possible.
Since topsoil will be very limited, the mined area should first be covered with
approximately 6" of the natural fines (minus II 4 sieve material on site) as a soil
building medium. Topsoil should then be spread. A chiseling operation is recommended
to pa`i•tiaYly mix subsoil, natural fines, and topsoil. „eSigce excessive cobble exists
natuca~ly in the topsoil, it will have to be rock raked' before drilling, or seed
will have to be broadcast. The attached seeding plan uses the broadcast option.
These species and varieties should come as closely as possible to restoring the
site to original conditions (See Range Inventory Sheet attached.)
If you ha•oe questions on these recommendations please let me know.
Richard T..
