I i An overview of the later historic periods is included as a supplement to Appendix J. <br />If cultural resources are discovered during operations, the operator shall immediately <br />notify the BLM. The operator shall not disturb such discoveries. Within five (5) working <br />days, the BLM will initiate the evaluation process for any cultural resources discovered <br />and will determine if any action may be required to protect or preserve these <br />discoveries. Cost or recovery/mitigation of these resources shall be borne by the <br />operator. All cultural resources discovered shall remain under the jurisdiction of the <br />United States of America. <br />4.2 Geologic Overview <br />4.2.1 Stratioraohv <br />The coal in the Permit Area (See Figure 4.2-1) lies in the Mount Garfield Formation of <br />the Mesa Verde Group of Upper Cretaceous Age. The Mount Garfield Formation <br />consists of buff and gray fine-grained and medium-grained sandstones and gray <br />shales. Although several coal seams occur in the upper part, the thick, economic coals . <br />lie in the lower portion of <br />4-5a 10/02 <br />
