Page 4
areas will be maintained and new marsh areas will be created to provide
suitable waterfowl habitat. Maximum water depth in the excavated areas will
range between 15 and 50 feet which should provide the basis for a good fishery.
An effort will be made to create as much irregular shoreline as is reasonably
practical and to create as many shallow shoreline areas as is reasonably
practicable also. The goal attempted by mining and reclamation is to create
the best possible habitat for wildlife while maximizing resource recovery.
The majority of reclamation up to the seeding stage will be accomplished
as a integral part of the mining operation as backfilling as necessarily
follows as closely as possible behind mining. Backfilling will be ac-
complished utilizing overburden, topsoil and silts from the settling ponds,
clays and silts from the pit, and 1/4" minus material that is not marketable.
Below are listed the reclamation standards to be applied to Durham Sand and
Gravel's operation:
Grading and Backfilling
All silts, clays and other by-products of the operation to be used in
backfilling, will be utilized first and placed at the bottom of a cut
which is to be backfilled. The topsoil will be placed on top of such
materials, bringing the backfill to the finished grade.
The maximum final slope will be no steeper than 2:1 (horizontal to
vertical), except from 5 feet above to 10 feet below the expected
water line where slopes will not be steeper then 3:1. Wherever the
operator finds it practicable, slopes will be left as flat as possible.
On all areas to be re-vegetated, a minimum of 6 inches of topsoil will
be evenly spread.
Seeding
Seeding will take place between October 15 and March 30 of any year.
All areas seeded will be fertilized with 50 pounds of available nitrogen
per acre. If seed is broadcast, it will be at twice the prescribed
rate followed by harrowing and dragging the seeded areas. If the areas
are to be drilled, a grass drill will be used to avoid planting the
seed to deep.
Two seeding mixtures are to be used: Seed Mix 111 will be used on
shoreline areas and areas within 3 feet of the water table; Seed Mix
112 will be used on areas above 3 feet above the water line. The
seeding mixtures are as follows:
Mix 111
Tall Wheatgrass -
Alkali Sacaton -
Switch grass -
Western Wheatgrass -
3.0 lbs/PLS
.5 lbs/PLS
1.0 lbs/PLS
3.0 lbs/PLS
7.5 lbs.
