Mr. James L. Schmieding - 2 - October 15, 1985
4. It is my understanding that grazing will be deferred until vegetation has
expressed vigor (self-regeneration features (new seedlings, seedheads,
vegetation reproduction, etc.)). This may be one or two years following
the "initial establishment of vegetation". Please correct me if my
interpretation is incorrect.
5. Please complete the sentence on Page "E-3" located in section 6.5 (d).
6. Will Mr. Rother claim responsibility for the reclamation performed by
A & S Construction Company if revegetation efforts fail and/or until the
area is released from financial and performance warranty responsibilities?
1. The "quick cover crop" seeding rate of 5 pounds of Western
Wheatgrass/Acre should be increased to 8 pounds of Western
Wheatgrass/Acre to achieve the S.C.S. recommended 40 seeds/sq. ft.. The
seeding rate of both quick cover crop species and 16 pounds of Western
Wheatgrass/Acre should be doubled, i.e. 10 pounds of Russian Wildrye/Acre
of broadcast seeding will be implemented.
8. It is my understanding that topsoil will be placed atop graded overburden
prior to revegetation efforts. Please correct me if my assumption is
incorrect.
9. Waiting one growing season prior to fertilization is suitable; however,
fertilization may be necessary for seedling establishment and growth.
Weeds commonly thrive the first growing season, providing a "green
mulch", decreasing in subsequent years. Weeds generally have the
competitive advantage over desired species in soils deficient in
nutrients. Mowing prior to weed seed establishment is an effective
control method.
10. The range site description of the Kim-Stoneham-Larimer Loams stated that
Western Wheatgrass and blue grama comprise two-thirds of the native
vegetation the S.C.S. Colorado Agronomy Note No. 61, "Seeding Rates"
(March 16, 1981), the following seeding rates are recommended:
Blue grama 40% 1.5# P.L.S./Acre
Side-oats grama 15% 1.5# P.L.S./Acre
Western Wheatgrass 30% 5.0# P.L.S./Acre
Sand dropseed 15% .2# P.L.S./Acre
TOTAL
100% 8.2# P.L.S./Acre
The seeding rates should be DOUBLED if broadcast seeding is implemented.
11. Is 3 ton/acre of much included in the reclamation plan?
12. I assume that page "J-4" - "Grass Seeding Planned" form is extraneous
information, and is not intended to be incorporated into the revegetation
plan. Please correct me if that assumption is wrong.
13. Is the vegetation of the entire (proposed) permitted boundary classified
as "shortgrass praire"?
