Parachute series <br />The Parachute series consists of moderately deep, <br />• well drained soils that formed in residuum from sand- <br />stone or marlstone. Parachute soils are on mountain- <br />sides. Slopes are 5 to 65 percent. The average annual <br />precipitation is about 20 inches, and the average annual <br />air temperature is about 40 degrees F. <br />Parachute soils are similar to Northwater and Rhone <br />soils. Northwater and Rhone soils are deep. <br />Typical pedon of Parachute loam, 5 to 30 percent <br />slopes, 75 feet north and 150 feet west of the southeast <br />corner of section 25, T. 4 S., R. 96 W. (fig. 9): <br />• <br />A7-0 to 5 inches; grayish brown (tOYR 5/2) loam, dark <br />brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak tine subangular <br />blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular, <br />slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly <br />plastic many fine roots; neutral; clear smooth <br />boundary. <br />821-5 to 13 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR <br />3/2) loam, very dark brown" (10YR 2/2) moist; mod• <br />eratP medium subangular blocky structure; slightly <br />hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; <br />70 percent fine channery fragments; many fine <br />roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. <br />B22-13 to 18 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, brown <br />(10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky <br />structure; slightly hard, triable, slightly sticky and <br />slightly plastic; 10 percent fine and medium chan- <br />nery fragments; common tine and medium roots; <br />neutral; clear wavy boundary. <br />B3-18 to 29 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) <br />extremely channery loam, yellowish brown (10YR <br />S/4) moist; weak coarse subangular blorky struc• <br />lure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; 80 percent <br />channery fragments mostly 3/4 inch to 3 inches in <br />size; few medium and fine roots; neutral; clear wavy <br />boundary. <br />R-29 inches; hard slightly fractured sandstone and <br />marlstone. <br />The mollic epipedon ranges from 10 to 15 inches in <br />thickness. Oepth to the lithic contact ranges from 20 to <br />40 inches. Texture of the control section is typically. <br />Icam, but clay content ranges from i8 to 35 percent <br />Content of rock fragments, most of which are 3/4 to 3 <br />inches long, range from 35 to 85 percent, by volume. <br />The A7 and 82 horizons have hue of 7.SYR to 2.SY, <br />value of 4 or 5 dry and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 on <br />3. The B3 and C horizons, where present, have hue of <br />7.SYR to 2.SY, value of 6 or 7 dry and a or 5 moist, and <br />chroma of 3 or 4. <br /> <br />
