• consociations of a minimum size of less than one acre were
delineated.
2. If soils were similar (i.e., low contrasting in physical and/or
chemical properties and/or depths of suitable soil), consociations
of a minimum size of one to two acres vrere delineated.
3. All snap units were correlated with existing Montrose County soil
series, where possible. k'here soils vrere significantly different
than the established sail series, these areas were classified and
reported using variant, phase, and disturbed land terminology.
Furthermore, each map unit eras fully described and the following items
were addressed:
- map unit symbol
- map unit name
- topsoil suitability
- chemical and physical properties
- slopes (their length, if important, and percentages)
• - parent material
- predominant vegetation type
As an additional product, Peabody maintained a complete and legible
field record which describes the soil characteristics for each hole that
was dug during the basic soil mapping phase. This historical
information, presented in Appendices 9-4-1 and 9-4-2, includes a
numerical listing for each sample site and map unit name for each
observation. It provides survey area wide data beyond the standard
point-specific sampling data. This information is important for soil
series range characteristics report discussions, as well as for more
specific topsoil suitability evaluations and subsequent topsoil volume
calculations. It also provides a written record of all field work that
can be utilized in any subsequent field reviews initiated by Peabody or
CMLRO personnel. All holes are appropriately numbered in the table and
plotted on the base maps (Exhibit 9-5, Soil Sample Locations).
• Map units were delineated on rectified aerial photograph base maps
(scale = 1" = 400', Exhibit 9-4).
