bottle cap, were located within the same depth range, 10-20
centimeters below surface. The bottle cap dates frocn circa
1900 to present {Hunt 1959). Any cultural linkage is viewed
negatively, as association is probably a result of •rodent
disturbance noted during excavation.
Test 4, a 1 x 1 meter. unit, was located farther upslope
and to the east (Map 2). The unit is situated.adjacent to
a road in which exposed cultural material is frequently noted.
Deposition within the area proved to be extremely shallow, as
the termination at bedrock was noted at 20 centimeters below
surface. The soil is totally silt with a high percentage of
decomposing plant: matter. Soil coloration is light gray. The
•
soils were noted to contain a high quality of gravels, and many
appear to be reddened by possible fire association. No charcoal •
or apparent cultural material was associated.
Tests 5 and 6 are incomplete units, number 5 a controlled
grid and number 6 a cutbank test located within a road cutbank.
The units were located northwest of Test 3, on a hill area north
of the stock tank: disturbance (Map 2). This locale was
chosen as a result of a high frequency of surface cultural
material and the close proximity of the Scottsbluff Type II
projectile fragme.nt.,
Soils within both units were similar, both being silt
looms varying in shades of dark gray. However, only unit 5
proved to be productive culturally. The unit was excavated
•
12
