amount of deposit:ion occurs within the lower regions of the •
drainage system.; maximum depth noted was 1.5 meters below
surface. The up:;lope deposits were shallow and on many occasions
nonexistent with exposed sandstone bedrock.
Testing began with the eight controlled excavation units,
four cutbank units and four grid units, denoted as Tests 1
through 8. Not all units were completed, the termination point be-
ing determined by three criteria bedrock, a lack of material
associated with dominant soils change, and most importantly,
abandonment once significance has been determined.
In an attempt to define maximum deposition within the
site boundary, Tests l and 2 were situated to the west, a low
area adjacent to the dominant area drainage (Map 2). Each
unit was a cutbank exposure, one meter wide, as were all con- •
trolled tests.
Test 1 (Figure 1) reached a maximum depth of 1.15 meters
below surface. This soil began as a light gray silt and with
increased depth changed from a silt loam to sandy clay loam to
clay loams, and finally based at a sandy clay. Coloration
varied equally, with the introduction of decomposing silts tone
fragments resulting in yellowish tints. Termination of a test
excavation unit was determined by the advent of the sandy clay
noted to be associated with the sandstone bedrock elsewhere
in the vicinity. No cultural material was located within the
test deposits.. However, charcoal was found at 43 centimeters
below surface, but cultural association was indeterminable. •
10
