~~~ Revised April 5, 1985
permit area is planned, the remainder of the narrative in this Section
will be devoted to a discussion of the unconfined alluvial aquifers.
Ground Water Recharge Characteristics
The proposed permit and adjacent area is located in a semi-arid
climate, with average annual precipitation of about 16 inches. Most
precipitation is lost to runoff, evepotranspiration and sublimation,
minimizing the amount available for ground water recharge. The
unconfined alluval aquifers are recharged in the spring when the
snowmelt water infiltrates through the alluvium.
Quality of Subsurface Water
The chemical characteristics of subsurface water in the overburden
aquifer and shallow ground water in the alluvial aquifers, existing
within the proposed permit and adjacent area are shown in Table 30,
Groundwater Quality Data. The quality of water in the alluvium is
• mostly calcium bicarbonate ions. The quality of the shallow ground
water is suitable for agricultural use.
(2) Surface Water Information
a) Surface water information shall be provided, including the name
of the watershed which will receive water discharges from the permit area,
the location of all surface water bodies such as streams, lakes, ponds, and
springs, the location of any water discharge into any surface body of
water, and descriptions of surface draining systems sufficient to identify,
in deatil, the seasonal variations in water quantity and quality with the
roposed permit and adjacent areas.
(b) Surface water information shall include:
(1) Minimum, maximum, and average flows which identify critical
low flow and peak discharge rates of streams sufficient to identify
. seasonal variations; and
2.04-22
